Pratt and Whitney, a subsidiary of UTC, is a world leader in the design, manufacture and support of gas turbine engines for commercial and military aircrafts. The Affordability & Mass Properties organization within Systems Engineering is responsible for assessing part cost, weight and mass properties for the entire engine as well as creating & managing strategies to reduce cost and weight of gas turbine hardware.

Job Description

In this co-op position, you will work with cross-functional teams including engineering component and design integration organizations, program management, supply chain management and operations. Upon completion of the assignment, you will have developed project management skills, improved communication skills, and gained an overall understanding of a gas turbine configuration and the engineering organization. This position will provide the opportunity to use Unigraphics, TeamCenter, SharePoint, cost modeling and Microsoft tools.

Potential activities include:

• Assess hardware weight, cost, life cycle cost and reduction initiatives

• Use Cost Estimation Modeling (CEM) tools to assess & understand cost drivers

• Assess engine weight and mass properties by part, automate mass property extraction from 3D models, and analyze weight reduction opportunities using FEM optimization tools like Altair SolidThinking.

Do you meet these Basic Qualifications?

  • You're in an accredited undergraduate or graduate engineering degree program.
  • Fields of study: Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering
  • You will have at least 30 credits prior to starting your internship
  • You have a GPA of 3.0 or higher

How about any of these Preferred Qualifications?
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and consistent record of collaboration, flexibility, innovation and initiative
  • This posting is for a co-op position starting in May 2020 and extends through December 2020.
  • Must be available to work 40 hours a week, first shift, Monday-Friday
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office
  • Interest, experience or coursework in the area of static/dynamic systems, stress, mechanical vibrations, FEM, material properties, manufacturing, gas turbines, statistics, MATLAB, macros, Microsoft Visual
  • Basic, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, NX, Machine shop or Computer Aided Manufacturing LAB is desirable
  • Ability to take direction, manage daily tasks and come back with solid results / solutions
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills (written & verbal), willing to reach out to subject matter experts for help
