Pratt & Whitney MSEN Mechanical Systems Engineering seeks a motivated, detail-oriented mechanical design engineer to join the design team. Working on inter-disciplinary teams, the selected candidate will perform mechanical design of rotor support hardware including bearings, seals, and the Fan Drive Gear System â€" the enabling technology for the P&W Geared Turbo Fan (GTF). This position requires creative design skills in engine hardware arrangement and packaging to achieve maintainable, low cost systems while meeting structural and functional requirements. The mechanical systems designer routinely interfaces with virtually every module on a PW gas turbine engine.

All design work will utilize Unigraphics solid modeling as well as in-house modeling and analysis tools. Opportunities are available on both military and commercial programs including the Geared Turbofan Family of engines being developed for the Airbus NEO, Bombardier C-series, Embraer and Mitsubishi Regional Jet, as well as the F135 engine for the Joint Strike Fighter.

Key job functions:

  • Develop technically sound design solutions within program schedule milestones that meet cost and weight goals.
  • Understand technical processes and design requirements of gas turbine mechanical systems hardware including bearings, seals, housings, and gears.
  • Learn and apply sophisticated solid modeling and analysis tools in a highly proficient manner.
  • Utilize standard work, QCPC, and other ACE tools to continuously improve the mechanical systems design process.
  • Communicate with team leadership and management on status and risks to program schedule and metrics (cost, weight, performance, etc).
  • Ability to effectively provide direction to others
  • Ability to negotiate design criteria/space with other departments including internal as well as external customers.
  • Ability to complete complex tolerance stacks for fit.


Do you meet these Basic Qualifications?
  • US Citizenship is required due to government contracts .
  • You're in an accredited four year degree program and are entering or currently in your last year.
  • Fields of study are:Engineering
  • You are graduating in Dec 2019 or May 2020
  • You have a GPA of 3.0 or higher

How about any of these Preferred Qualifications?
  • Entry-level Co-op/internship experience
  • Extraordinary interpersonal skills and proven track record of collaboration, adaptability, innovation and initiative
  • You demonstrate good analytical, organizational, and communication skills
